I designed my current layout using XtrkCAD, it not only helped me see how everything would fit, but also let me do 'virtual' operations to see if my design had any hidden flaws I wound up making several changes based on what I learned from those digital op sessions. However, I do like to make use of the available online freeware that can help me design and plan for operating sessions. One thing I've decided after spending time troubleshooting various I/T glitches on the job, is that I do NOT want to make my railroad operation dependent upon the proper functioning of a computer at home. I've earned a living for the past 30 years by programming and/or managing computers. Thanks and see you again on Sitting There.

How many of you use train simulation software and which ones do you use? Let me know if you think those categories are correct? Do they need changing?Ģ. So a lot of the conversation here will overlap the different categories I've outlined above.ġ. And the inventory program called Easy Model Railroad Inventory has a very nice switch list generator. For example, the main layout design program that I use, called 3rd PlanIt, includes a very good train simulation piece. Some software programs overlap those categories. This blog will be a thorough discussion of how software programs compare against each other, and what we like or don't like about them.Īs I see it, there are four major categories of railroad software: I will not be giving reviews of railroad software. This blog, named "Sitting There.", will be mostly about railroad software.
